Chapter Eighteen

Girth

“Before you say anything, they insisted that the girth of the straw was necessary.”

I frowned at Adam as he set the drink he’d bought me on the table. “I don’t know what you’re…”

Then I saw the straw.

My eyes widened to almost the circumference of the earth. Still not as wide a circumference as that straw, though. “I can’t suck on that in a public place.”

“I know, but they said…” Adam sighed, sliding into the booth next to me. He was sitting on the end now, with me between him and Carol. “God, I don’t want to repeat what they said. It had the words ‘thick’, ‘syrupy’ and ‘suction’ in it, though, so you can basically gather their point.”

“Adam, this straw is huge. It’s indecent.”

“Maybe just sip it from the cup?”

“I’ll spill it all over myself.”

He picked up the menu and opened it, standing it on the table in front of me like one of those screens rich women and people in period dramas get dressed behind. “There,” he said. “Sip behind this and only I’ll be able to see.”

“You’re the one I’m worried about.”

He smirked. “I’ll try not to make eye contact with you while you suck it.” He pulled a face. “I regret using the word ‘suck’. Somehow ‘drink’ also sounds weird. ‘Wrap your lips around it’ is likewise a bit much.”

“Adam?”

“Yeah?”

“You sound like me, which means it’s probably a good time to stop talking.”

He nodded. “You might have a point there.”

“OK,” said Carol, butting in, “now I’m sure you’re trying to steal my date.” She said it with a smile on her lips, but her eyes told me she wasn’t really cool with the new seating arrangements. And she probably also wasn’t alright with the fact that Adam had ordered more food and the two of us had ended up sharing our meals.

(Corn chips with guacamole and fresh salsa, chargrilled corn, chipotle, zucchini and smoked cauliflower tacos, and even black bean and – gasp – pumpkin tacos. All of which Carol described as ‘boring’ and which I described as ‘so delicious I might kill Adam if he took more than his fair share of any’. He didn’t test me, though, so we don’t know for sure if I actually would have done it.)

(I would have.)

“You’re paranoid, Carol,” said Topher, who was sitting on her other side. “Now, tell me more about your cats.”

“Your brother is really taking one for the team tonight,” Adam whispered in my ear. “If he doesn’t watch out, I might start liking him.”

“Let’s not go wild.”

“What do you think, is she a viable suspect?”

I shrugged. “Hard to say. She tried to touch your nether regions, which may make my opinion of her a little clouded.”

“This was your idea.”

“Which is why we should have known better than to do it.”

He smiled. “I find it hard to believe she would have tried to kill Yvette over her article being cut from the paper. I think she’s probably used to meeting people who aren’t quite ready for her culinary stylings.
